Our take
Why Tocaro Blue
The board's only maritime-perception FDE — below-market pay for genuinely rare field work putting radar-and-camera AI onto autonomous vessels.

A good fit if you're…
- Engineers drawn to maritime autonomy, defense, and perception on physical platforms
- People open to an on-site Gulf-Coast base in Birmingham, AL
- Those who want to deploy AI on moving hardware, not ship another SaaS feature
- Candidates who value a rare vertical over headline comp
What Tocaro Blue actually builds
Tocaro Blue makes AI/ML perception software that turns commodity marine radar and EO/IR cameras into autonomy-grade sensors — it doesn't build the boats. Its flagship, ProteusCore, auto-tunes radar and detects, classifies and tracks hundreds of marine targets in real time on CPU alone, trained on over two million labeled radar images. A companion product, ApolloCore, extends the same approach to electro-optical and infrared cameras.
What 'forward deployed' means on the water
Here deployment is literal. The FDE takes perception systems out of the lab and gets them working on real vessels, in real sea conditions, integrated with radars from Garmin, Raymarine, Simrad and Furuno. Expect high travel to maritime sites and the hardware-plus-environment debugging that comes with putting ML on a moving platform — salt, motion, noisy sensors, and no clean test harness to hide behind.
A defense-and-maritime vertical few FDEs ever see
Tocaro Blue serves defense, commercial and leisure marine autonomy, and partners with Furuno, Metal Shark and FarSounder to embed its software in autonomous platforms. It has reported more than 99% track probability in internal medium-unmanned-surface-vessel (MUSV) perception testing. This is uncrewed-surface-vessel work — a corner of applied AI almost no FDE candidate on the board will have touched before.
Comp and leveling: the honest tradeoff
The posted band is $105K–$132K — below market for an FDE seat, and the listing is upfront about it. Part of that is the Birmingham, AL on-site base; part is the early stage and the smaller (11–50 person) team versus a frontier lab. You're trading cash for a vertical and a geography you simply can't get anywhere else on the board.
The bar and the broader hiring push
The FDE req asks for a bachelor's in a relevant engineering or CS field — ocean, mechanical, electrical or naval architecture all count — plus about two years of experience. It sits inside a wider ML and autonomy hiring push: the careers page also lists navigation-and-autonomy and machine-learning engineer seats, suggesting a team actively scaling its perception stack rather than filling a one-off req.
Who thrives here
Thrives: engineers who want hardware-grounded, field-deployed work, are comfortable with defense-adjacent maritime customers, and will relocate to the Gulf Coast. Bounces: anyone who needs top-of-market comp, remote flexibility, or a pure-software problem — the entire value of this seat is that the AI has to survive the ocean, not a staging environment.
Questions candidates ask
Where is this based — can I do it remotely?
On-site in Birmingham, AL. Perception work on physical vessels doesn't translate to remote, and you should expect meaningful travel to maritime test sites on top of that.
Do I need a maritime or defense background?
Helpful but not required. The posting asks for a bachelor's in a relevant engineering/CS field — ocean, mechanical, electrical or naval architecture all count — plus about two years of experience.
Why is the pay below market?
The $105K–$132K band reflects the Birmingham base, the early stage (11–50 people), and a niche vertical. You're trading headline comp for rare maritime-autonomy field experience.
Is this defense work?
Partly. Tocaro Blue serves defense, commercial and leisure maritime autonomy and has a defense business-development push, so expect some defense-adjacent deployments — though it isn't exclusively a defense shop.
