A good fit if you're…
- Engineers who want to be a company's first deployment hire and define the function
- API / developer-tools people who like building against a clean, well-designed platform
- Those comfortable with early-stage ambiguity and an SF hybrid schedule
- Engineers who value low travel — this is embedded integration work, not road-warrior delivery
An API-first support platform, not a help-desk app
Plain builds a developer-focused B2B customer-support platform where everything is reachable by API. It pulls real-time channels — Slack, Microsoft Teams and Discord — together with email and chat in one workspace, and its AI workflows draft responses and surface product insights from customer conversations. Named customers include Sanity, Laravel, Stytch and Raycast — a developer-tools-heavy base that expects to build, not click.
Why the first FDE hire is the real signal
When an API-first company hires a deployment engineer, it's telling you its customers got big enough to need bespoke integration work instead of self-serve onboarding. You'd be that first hire: scoping with customer teams and building production integrations against the Plain API, end to end, until they're live. The deployment playbook doesn't exist yet — you write it, which is the whole appeal and the whole risk.
What 'forward deployed' means at Plain
Lower-travel, high-ownership integration engineering. The work is embedded with customers but centers on the API and the SF office (hybrid), not weeks on the road. You own the motion outright — scoping, building and shipping to a live deployment — which puts the role closer to a founding deployment engineer than to one cog in a mature field organization.
Comp and the first-hire equity trade
The board shows $180K-$250K plus equity — competitive for an early-stage first-deployment seat, with equity that's meaningful precisely because the stage is early. The draw isn't a promotion ladder, because there isn't one yet; it's being employee-defining for the entire deployment function and setting the standard the next hires inherit.
Founders and funding
Plain was built by ex-Deliveroo leaders Simon Rohrbach (CEO), who ran a 40-person content, research and design team, and Matt Vagni, who built Deliveroo's design systems and internal tooling — together they helped scale Deliveroo from 10 to 2,000 people. The company raised a $6M seed in 2022 (Index Ventures and Connect Ventures) and a $15M Series A in February 2025 led by Battery Ventures.
Who thrives here
Thrives: developer-tools engineers who like clean APIs, enjoy customer-facing scoping, and want to own a function rather than inherit one. Bounces: anyone who needs a defined ladder, a large peer group, or the certainty of a proven playbook — Plain's deployment motion, its team and its upmarket customer base are all still being written in real time.
Questions candidates ask
Is this really Plain's first FDE?
Yes — it's the first forward-deployed hire. You'd define the deployment playbook rather than inherit one, which is both the appeal and the risk of the seat.
How much travel is involved?
Low. It's an SF-hybrid role centered on the office and the Plain API; the job is embedded integration work, not frequent on-site travel.
What will I actually build?
Production integrations against Plain's API for specific customers — scoping with their teams, building end to end, and getting them to a live deployment.
What stage is Plain at?
Early. It raised a $6M seed in 2022 and a $15M Series A in February 2025 (Battery Ventures), and is expanding upmarket and into the US — equity is meaningful and ambiguity is real.
