A good fit if you're…
- Engineers who want a genuine founding-FDE seat and will define the playbook, not inherit one
- People drawn to unglamorous, high-ROI physical-economy AI over consumer LLM hype
- Candidates comfortable owning the technical half of enterprise sales: discovery, POCs, go-live
- Builders who thrive at 11–50-person scale with direct founder access and no process yet
Ex-Samsara operators betting on trucking's back office
Hyperscale Systems was founded in 2025 by Oliver Song and Bo DellaMaria, who helped scale Samsara through its IPO before leaving to build an AI “superagent” named Vic for trucking carriers. Vic automates fleet operations, planning, recruiting, safety, maintenance, and accounting — the unglamorous back-office work that keeps freight moving. It's a roughly 11–50-person, seed-backed San Francisco company with SOC 2 compliance and a 2026 FreightTech 100 listing.
The founding FDE owns the entire technical close
This is the first FDE hire, and the posting is explicit: you “own the technical side of our customer lifecycle.” That means leading discovery calls, designing proof-of-concept configs against each carrier's TMS/ELD/dispatch stack, running tailored demos, executing pilots, and shepherding customers through go-live — plus RFPs and security questionnaires. Pre-sales and post-sales collapse into one seat working directly with founders, GTM, and engineering.
Travel is lighter than the embedded-FDE stereotype
Despite the on-site-embedding framing, the role is only “up to 10% travel in steady state” — roughly one customer visit a month for one to two days. The rest is remote-leaning from San Francisco (in-person when not traveling). If you pictured Palantir-style multi-week deployments, this is a gentler version; the intensity lives in the technical complexity, not the airport miles.
Comp is a founding-equity bet, not a cash number
The board lists comp as “Undisclosed (founding equity),” so size this as an equity-heavy wager on a seed-stage company rather than a package you can benchmark. Hyperscale wants 2–5 years of software or full-stack engineering at high-growth B2B companies, fluency with APIs, webhooks, and system architecture, and ideally Python/SQL — strong-but-not-senior IC experience traded for founding ownership.
What 'success' explicitly looks like in year one
The posting defines the bar unusually clearly: launch 3+ pilots with clear metrics, build the technical close plans and sales collateral (demo scripts, ROI calculators), and close at least 2 deals where your technical work was decisive. That makes this as much a founding sales-engineering role as a coding one — the deliverable is renewed deployments and closed revenue, not merged PRs.
Who thrives, and who should pass
Thrives: high-agency generalists who like ambiguity, customer pressure, and building a go-to-market motion from scratch. Passes: anyone wanting deep model research, a fully-remote pure-IC product role, or a legible comp band before signing. This is physical-economy AI measured in ROI calculators and resolved tasks, not benchmarks.
Questions candidates ask
Is this really a 'founding' FDE role?
Yes — it's Hyperscale's first FDE hire, reporting into the founders and owning the technical customer lifecycle end to end. You'd define the playbook, not inherit one.
How much travel is involved?
Light for an FDE — the posting says up to 10% in steady state, about one one-to-two-day customer visit a month. It's San Francisco in-person when you're not traveling.
What's the comp?
Undisclosed founding equity plus salary. Treat it as an equity-heavy bet on a seed-stage company; you can't benchmark the package from the posting.
What background do they want?
2–5 years as a software/full-stack engineer at high-growth B2B companies, comfort with APIs, webhooks and architecture, and ideally Python/SQL plus any logistics or FDE experience.
