Our take

Why Handshake

The campus-recruiting company quietly became one of the fastest-growing AI-data businesses anywhere — and its FDEs sit across the table from frontier-lab researchers.

A good fit if you're…

  • Engineers interested in evals, benchmarks and AI training data
  • People who want frontier-lab-facing work without joining a lab
  • Candidates at IC or senior level in the Bay Area
  • Those comfortable turning a vetted expert network into technical product

From campus recruiting to AI data

Handshake ran a college-recruiting network for a decade — founded 2013, now 18M+ students across 1,600+ universities — before launching Handshake AI in January 2025. The new business turns its network of vetted PhDs and domain experts into a training-data and evaluation engine for frontier AI labs: step-by-step reasoning chains, preference rankings, and domain evals in mathematics, physics and computer science.

One of the fastest ramps in AI data

The AI segment went from roughly $5–10M at its January 2025 launch to near $1B annualized gross revenue by 2026, per Sacra — up about 349% year over year — making Handshake a direct rival to Scale, Surge and Mercor almost overnight. Tellingly, Sacra reports that Mercor and Scale themselves source some experts through Handshake's own platform, which says a lot about who owns the supply. That velocity is why the FDE function exists at all — labs sign quickly, and someone has to make each engagement technically real on a deadline.

What “forward deployed” means here

FDEs are the technical interface to frontier-lab customers: scoping and delivering custom evals, benchmarks and specialized data pipelines, and translating a lab's research needs into work the expert network can execute. It's solutions engineering pointed at the most demanding buyers in AI — the labs themselves — so the bar is research-fluency and crisp communication, not just integration plumbing.

The Cleanlab acqui-hire

In January 2026 Handshake acqui-hired data-quality startup Cleanlab, bringing in nine researchers including co-founders Curtis Northcutt, Jonas Mueller and Anish Athalye (all MIT CS PhDs). Cleanlab's work — algorithmically flagging bad labels without a second human reviewer — points at where Handshake is investing: data-quality and label-auditing infrastructure, not just more human throughput. For an FDE that means a deepening research bench to sell behind.

Comp & leveling

The board shows $100K–$200K+ across IC and Senior levels — a wide range that reflects the level spread rather than a single offer. It's competitive rather than frontier-lab-tier cash, but the seniority ceiling and equity in a business compounding this fast are the real levers. The expert network pays contributors roughly $100–125/hour, which frames the economics you'd be selling.

What to weight before joining

The upside is obvious: explosive revenue, marquee customers (Handshake says it has supplied data to eight top labs, OpenAI among them), and a research bench deepening via acquisition. The risks are the AI-data market's — thinner margins (~30% gross versus ~80% on the legacy job board), labor intensity, and labs increasingly pulling data work in-house as they mature. If you believe labs keep outsourcing frontier data and evals, the seat is well-placed; if you think they insource it, weigh that risk before betting several years here.

Questions candidates ask

Is this the same Handshake students use for jobs?

Same company, different business. Handshake AI launched in January 2025 to sell training data and evals to frontier labs; the career network still runs alongside it.

Who are the customers?

Frontier AI labs — Handshake says it has provided data to eight top labs, including OpenAI. FDEs work directly with their researchers.

How is this different from joining a lab?

You get frontier-lab-facing technical work — evals, benchmarks, data pipelines — without being inside a lab, and across many labs rather than betting on one.

Is the comp lab-tier?

No. The board shows about $100K–$200K+ across IC and Senior levels; the draw is growth-stage equity and the seniority ceiling, not top-of-market cash.
