Our take

Why Flow Engineering

One of the rare FDE seats that rewards a hardware/MBSE background over pure software -- founding-era scope, now on a $750M Series B.

A good fit if you're…

  • Systems, hardware and MBSE engineers moving into customer-facing work
  • Engineers who want to be among a startup's first FDEs and shape the motion
  • People drawn to space, defense, auto and fusion customers
  • Those who want real equity upside and on-site San Francisco intensity

What Flow builds

Flow Engineering makes an AI-powered systems-engineering platform for hardware teams. Its agents coordinate changes across mechanical, electrical and software engineering, track engineering changes and their downstream effects, and verify requirements and test coverage -- aiming to cut hardware iteration cycles from months to days. Customers span autos and aerospace to defense and fusion: GM, Rivian, Volkswagen, Anduril, Stoke Space, Intuitive Machines, Joby, Astranis, Pacific Fusion and Radiant Industries.

What 'forward deployed' means here

As one of Flow's first forward-deployed engineers, you own the technical win -- custom demos, POC execution, mapping customer workflows and running enablement -- while acting as engineering's eyes in the field and shaping the roadmap. Unusually, Flow weights 3+ years of hardware, mechanical or systems engineering (MBSE) plus pre/post-sales over the standard software-integration profile. The role is on-site in San Francisco, not remote.

The funding picture changed in October 2026

Flow is no longer a seed-stage bet. After a $23M Series A led by Sequoia, it raised a $50M Series B at a $750M valuation in October 2026, co-led by Antonio Gracias's Valor Equity Partners and Gavin Baker's Atreides Management, with Sequoia returning. Angel backers include the Collison brothers, David Helgason and Jeff Parrish. It is an early company with a big balance sheet -- founding-era scope, de-risked funding.

Comp and what you are really buying

The board shows a $165K-$230K OTE plus equity. The OTE structure and still-early headcount make this effectively equity-heavy: the upside rides on the paper at a $750M post, not the cash. For a specialized hardware profile taking an on-site SF seat, the cash is competitive and the equity is the bet.

Why the customer base is both the moat and the risk

Flow's logos are marquee and sticky -- reporting on its raise says Rivian's usage grew from 40 to 1,500 users in seven months, the land-and-expand that justifies a deployment hire. The flip side: space, defense, auto and fusion is a durable but narrow market, so an FDE's job is to turn a handful of deep accounts into the reference base, not to chase volume.

Who thrives here

Thrives: systems and hardware engineers who want to be in the room with GM or Anduril, comfortable owning the technical win and relocating to SF. Bounces: pure-software FDEs wanting remote work or a large existing playbook -- this is a founding-era seat where you define the deployment motion for a hardware-native product.

Questions candidates ask

Do I need a software or a hardware background?

Both help, but Flow is unusual in weighting hardware: it asks for strong software fundamentals plus 3+ years of hardware, mechanical or systems engineering (MBSE) and some pre/post-sales experience. It is a seat for systems engineers moving into customer-facing work.

Is the role remote?

No. It is on-site in San Francisco. The forward-deployed work still takes you into customer environments, but the base expectation is in person in SF.

Is Flow still early-stage?

It is early but well-funded. It raised a $50M Series B at a $750M valuation in October 2026 after a $23M Sequoia-led Series A -- a founding-era FDE seat attached to a company with real runway.

What does it pay?

The board shows a $165K-$230K OTE plus equity. Given the early stage and OTE structure, treat it as equity-heavy -- the real upside is the stock at a $750M valuation, not the cash.
