Our take
Why DeepJudge
A rare on-site, non-US frontier seat at a freshly-funded legal-AI scale-up — and the tell isn't the one role, it's the whole Deployment Engineering org built around it.

A good fit if you're…
- Engineers who want European, on-site deployment work rather than remote-US roles
- People drawn to enterprise search and document-heavy retrieval problems
- Candidates comfortable in regulated, on-prem legal environments and law-firm IT
- Those who want ground-floor scope in a newly-built deployment-engineering function
A Zurich legal-AI shop built by ex-Google search engineers
DeepJudge builds an AI knowledge platform for law firms — a retrieval-first layer that indexes a firm's precedents, clauses and internal memos and plugs them into AI workflows inside a secure environment. It was founded by former Google search engineers with AI PhDs from ETH Zurich (Kevin Roth is co-founder and COO). Named customers include Freshfields, Holland & Knight, Cozen O'Connor, ArentFox Schiff and Schoenherr — serious AmLaw and European firms, not pilots.
The org chart is the real signal
Most companies bolt one FDE onto an existing team. DeepJudge stood up a whole Deployment Engineering function — Forward Deployed Engineer, Pre-Sales, Production, SRE and Solution Architect as distinct tracks. That structure says deployment is treated as core engineering, not post-sales glue, and it gives an incoming FDE a defined ladder and specialist peers to lean on rather than being the lone technical contact improvising the playbook.
What the Zurich FDE actually owns
Per DeepJudge's Ashby posting, you own the technical implementation end to end: deploying and configuring the platform across cloud and complex on-prem environments, integrating with document-management systems, identity providers and cloud platforms, and troubleshooting across infra, networking, auth and application behaviour. You build deployment automation and operational playbooks, then feed recurring customer needs back to product. It wants 3+ years in SWE, DevOps, forward deployment or solutions engineering, with Kubernetes, Docker and Azure or GCP.
Comp: a Swiss package, not an SF one
Comp is undisclosed on the board, and that's the honest read — Swiss engineering salaries are high in absolute terms but are quoted against Zurich benchmarks, not San Francisco frontier-lab ranges. Treat this as a competitive European package and negotiate against local cost-of-living and tax rather than US headline numbers. The non-cash draw is on-site frontier scope in a sticky, regulated vertical.
Why on-prem legal is a durable place to be
Law firms are among the slowest, most security-conscious enterprise buyers, which makes them hard to win and hard to lose. Hundred-million-document datasets, on-prem constraints and strict confidentiality are exactly the problems a forward-deployed engineer exists to solve, and they don't commoditise. For a candidate, the deployment skills you build here transfer to any regulated, document-heavy enterprise rather than to one vendor's stack.
Who thrives here, and who shouldn't apply
Thrives: an engineer who likes being on-site in Zurich, enjoys untangling a law firm's messy IT, and wants to help define a young function. Bounces: anyone set on fully-remote US work, pure product IC roles, or model-layer research — this is infrastructure-and-integration deployment work in a European office, and relocation or existing Swiss work authorization is effectively assumed.
Questions candidates ask
Is the DeepJudge FDE role remote or on-site?
On-site at the Zurich HQ. It's one of the few true forward-deployed seats that is explicitly European and in-office rather than remote-US — plan on relocating to or already living near Zurich.
What background does DeepJudge want for its FDE?
3+ years in software engineering, DevOps, forward deployment or solutions engineering, with hands-on Kubernetes, Docker and Azure or GCP. It's an infra-and-integration role, not model research or pure frontend.
Does DeepJudge publish comp?
No — the band is undisclosed. Expect a competitive Zurich-market package and negotiate against Swiss salary, tax and cost-of-living benchmarks rather than US frontier-lab numbers.
Is DeepJudge funded enough to be worth the move?
It raised a USD 42M Series A in November 2025 (led by Felicis, Coatue continuing) and lists AmLaw and large European firms as customers — real traction for a scale-up, though smaller and earlier than a public employer.
