A good fit if you're…
- Engineers who want founding-style ownership on a fully-remote US seat
- People drawn to fintech and regulated credit-union lending
- Those who weight equity upside and product influence over cash certainty
- Candidates who want customer proximity without a classic support or implementation desk
Turning credit unions into fintechs
Clutch builds the digital lending and deposit-account platform that lets member-owned credit unions ship modern, bank-grade products. It has become the default infrastructure fast: six of the ten largest US credit unions now run on it, and the platform reaches roughly 30 million members — about one in five US credit-union members. A $65M Series B (Jan 2025, led by Alkeon, with a16z and TruStage among backers) funds the push.
The AI lending bet underneath the role
This FDE builds the technical foundation for Clutch's new AI lending products — the fastest-growing part of the company. Its loan-origination AI agent already collects 80% of required member documents with no human staff, and the AI line is growing about 450% year-over-year, outpacing the core software business. You're shipping into that curve, not maintaining a mature product surface.
What “forward deployed” means here
Clutch is explicit that this is 'not a support or implementation role.' It's high-ownership, ship-fast, shape-the-product work — closer to a founding engineer with customer proximity than a deployment desk. You work directly with credit-union clients to deploy, configure and optimize per environment, ramping to independently leading deployments within about six months on a trusted-technical-advisor track.
Comp: equity-weighted, cash undisclosed
Cash comp isn't posted and the framing is equity-heavy with stock options. That points to real upside for the right person alongside a real cash trade-off against a frontier-lab offer. Before weighting the 'founding-style' pitch, get the base and equity split in writing — the headline is ownership, not a published band.
Why the credit-union wedge is sticky
The credit-union market is large, underserved and switching-cost-heavy, and Clutch's six top-ten partners alone hold more than $450B in assets. Once a core lending and deposit stack is embedded it rarely moves, which is why early share matters here. For an FDE, that stickiness means the deployments you ship tend to compound rather than churn.
Who thrives, and who bounces
Thrives: senior ICs comfortable owning end-to-end remote deployments, patient with regulated fintech, and energized by a product still being shaped. Bounces: anyone who needs a posted cash band up front, in-office peer density, or a finished product to maintain — the autonomy here is the point, and it cuts both ways.
Questions candidates ask
Is this role remote?
Yes — it's a full-remote seat based in the US.
Is the compensation disclosed?
No. Clutch frames comp as equity-heavy with stock options and doesn't post a cash band — ask for the base and equity split before deciding.
Is this an implementation or support seat?
No. Clutch states explicitly that it's 'not a support or implementation role' — it's a high-ownership, shape-the-product engineering seat.
What would I actually build?
The technical foundation for Clutch's new AI lending products, deployed and tuned into each credit union's environment.
