Our take

Why Casca

One of the rare FDE reqs explicitly open to new grads — a YC, Canapi-backed 'AGI for banking' shop shipping an AI loan-origination system against 30-year-old bank cores.

A good fit if you're…

  • Strong new grads who want a real FDE seat, not an internship on-ramp
  • Engineers drawn to regulated fintech and legacy banking-core integration
  • People who want SF on-site, high-ownership YC-startup work
  • Candidates comfortable betting on early, private equity over liquid comp

An AI-native system of record for bank lending

Casca (legal name Cascading AI, founded 2023) builds AI-native loan origination for community banks and credit unions. Its product centers on an agent called 'Sarah' that walks small-business borrowers through applications over email and SMS, chases missing documents, and assembles underwriting-ready files. Casca's own numbers: document collection that saves loan officers about 20 hours a week, and AI that reads 10,000 pages in roughly five minutes.

Shipping against 30-year-old bank cores

The deployment surface is the point. FDEs embed with FDIC-insured banks and SBA lenders to wire Casca into decades-old core systems, regulated lending workflows, and compliance review — not a greenfield SaaS integration. This is production fintech where the last mile is messy, audited, and unforgiving, which is exactly why Casca puts engineers on-site with the customer instead of handing them a self-serve API.

The new-grad-friendly seat is real

Casca's FDE req is one of the few on the board explicitly open from new grad through senior, verified on its Y Combinator listing. That posture is a tell: a company confident enough in its onboarding to bet on raw talent rather than demand five years of fintech scar tissue. For a strong new grad, it's a rare path straight into a high-ownership deployment seat at a funded startup.

Comp: one band, the whole ladder

The posted band is $100K–$200K — unusually wide because the same req spans early-career to senior, and your level decides where you land. It's competitive for YC-stage but weighted toward equity: Casca is private and early, so the real upside is the stock, not the cash. Expect a lower cash floor than a frontier lab, in exchange for a longer, riskier payoff.

Funding and momentum

Casca raised a $29M Series A in August 2025 led by Canapi Ventures, with Live Oak Bank, Huntington National Bank, Bankwell Bank, Y Combinator and others — roughly $33M total, after a $3.9M pre-seed in early 2024. Several of those investors are also customers, which is about the strongest signal a fintech can have. It also won Best of Show at FinovateSpring 2024.

Who thrives here

Thrives: engineers who like owning a regulated deployment end-to-end, enjoy customer-facing work with bankers, and want SF on-site intensity. Bounces: anyone after remote, pure-IC product engineering, or who needs the comfort of a large FDE bench and a defined promotion ladder — at this stage you're helping build both, not joining them.

Questions candidates ask

Can a new grad actually get this FDE role?

Yes — Casca's req is explicitly open from new grad through senior, which is rare for an FDE seat. Strong grads are genuinely in scope; the $100K–$200K band flexes with your level.

Is this role remote?

No. It's on-site in San Francisco. The embedded, customer-facing nature of bank deployments is why Casca wants its FDEs in person.

What would I actually build?

You'd deploy and customize Casca's AI loan-origination platform inside banks — integrating with legacy cores, tuning the 'Sarah' applicant agent, and making regulated lending workflows survive real production use.

How stable is the company?

Early but well-capitalized: about $33M raised including a $29M Series A (Aug 2025) led by Canapi, with several bank investors doubling as customers. It's a startup bet, but a funded one.
